As the seasons shift from Summer into Autumn, I find my daily routines are shifting too. Fall is one of my favorite seasons, renewing my soul as the leaves show off their vibrant hues. The air becomes crisper and pumpkins line porch steps throughout the neighborhood. School is back in session, football games are in full swing, and my cute sweaters have come out of storage.
At the start of September I set aside a day to pull out the Fall decorations, pack away Summer, and transform our home into a cozy Autumn hideaway. In October, my favorite month, the Halloween décor gets added to the Fall. November, Thanksgiving decorations appear and so on through the Holidays. Here are three reasons why I think getting into the rhythm of decorating for the seasons is good for us:
Decorating Shifts Our Focus to the Beauty Around Us
For me, decorating for the seasons is an intentional part of living as it focuses my mind on the beauty around me both inside the home and outside in nature. Creating a sense of cohesiveness inside the home that matches what is happening outside in nature, gives one a feeling of consistency and peace day to day. It also reminds us to pause briefly and breath in the changing seasons, appreciating nature more day by day.
Decorating Reminds Us of Fond Memories
Oftentimes, our seasonal decorations have many fond memories attached to them. Whether of our childhood, our first home, or a gift from a friend, these memories can bring a smile to our face. Too often, we are racing through the day to day, without much time to “remember the time when…” but when we see our decorations, we are reminded of those happy times.
l love unboxing and arranging beautiful things I haven’t seen in many months! It fills my heart with happiness to think back on the memories attached to these treasures.
Decorating Keeps Us Attentive to the Treasures We’ve Surrounded Ourselves With
How often do you pause to appreciate that piece of art you bought five years ago that is hanging in the same place you put it the day you came home with it? When was the last time you looked at the photos in the frames on the bookshelf, of your loved ones from family vacation that feels like a lifetime ago? After a while of seeing the same things hanging on the wall, or sitting on the shelf, day in and day out, we get so wrapped up in our routines we eventually drift past them leaving our most precious memories and trinkets unnoticed.
Changing the décor from time to time gives our minds something new to look at and appreciate. Keeping us attentive to the home we’ve worked so hard to build and the memories we cherish so deeply.
Decorating for the seasons keeps things fresh in the home and can add a lot of joy to our everyday. It signifies the passage of time yet also reminds us to remain present in the current season.
