16 years ago, this guy showed up at the on-campus worship service in a Hooters T-shirt and stood right behind me talking and laughing. Naturally, I turned around and had a few things to say about all of it. A few days later, he stopped by my dorm room to ask me on a date and of course, I said no… but he kept asking. After a few asks and some encouragement from my college roommate, Lacey, to “just go, so he’ll go away”, I let him take me to Red Lobster.
That was supposed to be one date. The date that made him go away.
But he didn’t.
We quickly fell in love, having fun and dreaming about our lives together. Then summer came and I could sense the divide growing. In October, on his 21st birthday, Doug called to end our relationship. He was in PA school and didn’t need the distraction of a girlfriend. Somehow he managed to convince me to stay friends, or really God just knew what He was doing. 😉
Like LANCO’s song says, “We didn’t know any better, we didn’t have a clue about life.“
13 years ago this guy showed up at my apartment late one night, in a celebratory stupor, and asked me to marry him to which I promptly replied, in a very angry tone, “Get up. When you’re sober, you can take me on a date and I’ll consider marrying you.”
Two and a half years ago, after 16 years of friendship during which we walked with each other through some of the most difficult and happiest times of our lives, he took me on that date. And those dates haven’t stopped!
“Sure we changed but way deep down you had the same old feelings for me.”
June 21, 2020 he got down on one knee and asked if I would be his wife, this time for real. Through tear-filled eyes and much disbelief, I said yes!
I am the luckiest girl in the world! I get to marry my best friend, my college sweetheart, and even though I may not have known it all along, the love of my life.
And just like the song says, “We’re gonna be the greatest love story this world has ever seen…”
There are a lot of changes happening around here and I plan to share all of it with you! Sign up for my newsletter here to follow along!
